Energy label

What energy label does your car actually carry?

Your car carries two letters: the one it was registered with, and the one it would be given today. Cantonal eco discounts go by the first.

Item 24 on the registration document. We take the consumption and fuel from it.

Two letters, not one

The letter from the registration year and the letter for today are rarely the same. You see both side by side, and which one counts for what.

The scale moves

86 % of vehicles from 2020 to 2024 rate worse today than they did at registration, usually by one to four grades.

It is about money

Eight cantons tie their eco discount to the category. The wrong letter can turn a bonus into a surcharge.

Why two letters

The energy efficiency category is not a property of the car but its place in a ranking – and the ranking is re-cut every year, because the new-car market keeps getting leaner. A car that sat in the best twenty per cent in 2021 sits in the middle by 2026 without a single thing about it having changed. So every car carries two letters: the one from its registration year, which went on the label and which the cantons ask for when granting a discount, and today’s, which shows where it would stand among the cars on sale now. We compute both.
